Privacy policy

The short version

• There are no accounts, no logins and no forms on this site. You cannot give us personal data through the site, and we do not ask for any.
• We set no cookies today.
• Once display advertising runs, advertising cookies may be used by our advertising partner. Visitors in the European Union, the United Kingdom and other places where consent is required will be asked first.

What is processed when you visit

Hosting logs. The site is served by Cloudflare. Like every web host, Cloudflare receives your IP address, browser type and the pages you request, and keeps short-lived logs to run and protect the service. We use these only in aggregate (for example, how many people read a page).

Fonts. Pages load typefaces from Google Fonts, so Google's servers receive your IP address when the font files are requested. We intend to host the fonts ourselves and will update this page when we do.

Headlines. The world desk is built on our side. Your browser does not contact the newsrooms whose headlines you see until you click a link to their site, where their own privacy policy applies.

Advertising

We plan to show advertising from Google AdSense on newsroom posts. When that starts, Google and its certified partners may set advertising cookies and use identifiers to show ads and measure them. You will be able to refuse personalised advertising through the consent notice, and you can opt out of personalised ads from Google at any time through Google's ad settings. We will update this page with the exact partners before the first ad runs.

Your rights

If you are in the EU or UK (GDPR), California (CCPA) or elsewhere with similar rules, you have rights to access, correct and delete personal data held about you. Because we hold none, the practical route is to contact our hosting or advertising providers for data they process. We will help: write to [email protected].

Children

The site is a general news site and is not directed at children under 16. We knowingly collect no data from anyone.

Changes

When this policy changes we update the date below. Material changes (for example, when advertising starts) are also announced on the front page for a week.
